MyConcern at Hilbre High School

Hilbre is a hard-working, lively academy in the Wirral where they believe that learning is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all students.

The school has recently been recognised as "Good" in all categories by Ofsted. They pride themselves in recognising the varied and individual needs of their students, and the broad, balanced education they provide, both inside and outside the classroom, ensures their students can leave school with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to contribute confidently to today’s ever changing world.

Challenge

When it came to recording safeguarding issues, Hilbre had been used to using a Hilbre logopaperbased method, which worked to an extent but was found to be a very time-consuming process. The manual system had other potential pitfalls including difficulty locating paperwork and information loss, therefore there were concerns over keeping track and following up issues effectively.

Solution

MyConcern is an online solution which integrates with the schools management information system. It provides a safe and secure management system to record and review all safeguarding concerns. The system enables all staff to record any safeguarding concern, safe in the knowledge that a proper record has been made and that their safeguarding lead has been automatically notified. It also equips the designated safeguarding lead to assess each concern and manage any ongoing action that needs to be taken. Hilbre High began using MyConcern on the 1st November 2015.

“This process went extremely smoothly and required minimal manual intervention. The whole system was up and running in no time. Myself and the other dedicated safeguarding leads had a really effective, bespoke training session. MyConcern is very intuitive and simple to use. We were also offered telephone and online support, so if we had any issues, we had a route to find a resolution very quickly."

Safeguarding concerns can be raised by any member of staff not just the designated safeguarding leads therefore it was important to ensure all staff were trained on the system.

“Our school was given a handy information sheet that covered the steps involved in recording a new concern or to update an existing one. As a dedicated safeguarding lead, one of the great features of MyConcern is how the system sends an automatic notification to let me and the other dedicated safeguarding leads know when a concern has been raised or amended. It makes the job of tracking a concern so much easier.”

Impact

There has been a positive impact on safeguarding practices at Hilbre high, MyConcern is now embedded in all safeguarding policies and staff practice. MyConcern provides a safety net and staff feel supported both in and out of school as the system is accessible at any time. Concerns can be recorded instantly on the go using your mobile phone and other devices, so there’s no waiting around to access a paper recording system. This gives confidence that the information recorded is fresh and accurate, there’s no delay in the recording process.

I feel the school is a safer place, we are able to react quickly to new issues, and it enables a much more proactive approach to safeguarding in general. We’ve even been sharing our experience with other schools coming to Hilbre to see how the system works. We have become a beacon school for safeguarding.

Success

This has been recognised by Ofsted who undertook an inspection in June 2016. In their report, Ofsted identified safeguarding as a strength for Hilbre High. Safeguarding is much more effective at Hilbre High School since we have been using MyConcern. We are continuing to develop excellent safeguarding practice and as recognised by OfstedHilbre High School is a safe and vigilant environment.
