Responsible Business Week galvanises hundreds of businesses just like ours, their leaders, employees and partners, to create a public conversation on the power of responsible business in order to effect positive change and demonstrate how they’re taking action.
18-22 April 2016 was Responsible Business Week, an annual awareness week organised by Business in the Community. We took the opportunity to be ambassadors for the responsible business agenda by supporting this. To show our support, we created an internal communications programme, with a dedicated area of our intranet, to allow us to discuss what we’re doing to support the agenda, and to encourage our employees to share their thoughts on what it means to be a responsible business and where we could improve.
Our areas of focus and our achievements
Over the course of the week, we spoke about our four overarching focus areas: suppliers, employees, the environment and communities and clients. We took best in class examples from across the business and showcased our achievements in each, speaking about the fantastic work our businesses do to bring these to life.
- 76% of our supplier base are SMEs. Where possible we support the communities in which we work by using local suppliers.
- 100% of our strategic suppliers are annually audited against our standards of business, helping us secure best value goods and services.
- In 2015, we retained 81% of our employees, who are vital to our success in delivering high quality, efficient services to our clients.
- In 2015, we retained 98% of our senior management team, allowing us to have the right leadership and skills to deliver the Group’s long-term growth strategy.
- We aim to manage and reduce our environmental impacts and use our resources efficiently. In 2015 our carbon footprint was 124,329 (tonnes CO2eq), down from 139,672 in 2014.
Community and clients
- In terms of cash, time given, and in-kind donations, our community impact in 2015 was worth £2.3m, up from £2.2m in 2014.
- We’ve raised over half a million pounds for our corporate charity partner, The Prince’s Trust, so far.
Our CR Steering Group
Our corporate responsibility is managed Capita-wide and at business level. While the board has overall responsibility for our activity, the day-to-day management of our corporate responsibility is managed by senior representatives from across the business who together make up the CR Steering Group. Over the week, we heard from members of the CR Steering Group on what they believe are the big issues currently facing our company.
From being a responsible business to being a responsible employee
As individuals, we can all seek to work responsibly. It is no coincidence that our Corporate Values (‘VOICE’) prominently include words like ‘honesty’, ‘integrity’ and ‘ownership’.
Chris Terry, our compliance director, discussed in his CR Steering Group blog the importance of being both a responsible business, and a responsible employee. We took a look at the ways in which our employees can be responsible, such as through volunteering opportunities, fundraising events, Green Week, payroll giving initiative and signing up to receive our regular charity communications.
The week was a success, and helped bring the responsible business agenda to the forefront of everybody’s mind.
