Capita’s partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council designed a solution to replace the inefficient and aged street lighting, by fitting energy efficient and low maintenance LED lighting, completed in 2016.
Over the last four years, by fitting the LED street lights the Council has saved over £1.6m on their energy bills and in addition has reduced street lighting maintenance costs as well as reducing energy and carbon emissions.
As well as reducing costs, the council has also reduced the amount of energy they use therefore reducing their carbon footprint raising the environmental profile of the Council. The lighting itself has improved visibility on highways and has helped local police with a reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour due to the improved lighting assisting with better imagery detection from CCTV.
Given the huge cost savings over the last four years, it’s expected that Capita’s partnership with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s projected promise of £8m energy savings over the next 20 years is right on track.

“I just wanted to thank everyone involved in replacing the old sodium orange street lights with the new LED soft white ones. It has made such a difference when I go out at night! The new lighting is clearly more environmentally friendly and economical, so congratulations all round!”
