Blackburn cinema and under-croft car park

Capita are providing a variety of services for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to assist the design and construction of the Blackburn Reel cinema and under-croft car park. They will ensure that the employers' requirements are met to a high-quality standard.

Capita has assigned highly experienced professionals, to offer design services and advice, for a range of disciplines throughout the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) stages 2-3. These include landscape architecture, acoustic consultants, mechanical and electrical services, fire engineering and architecture.

Further to this Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council have appointed Capita to provide additional services up to practical completion of the project through RIBA stages 4-6. These appointments include; employers’ agent, costs consultant, construction design and management (CDM) adviser and quality monitoring for both the building fabric and mechanical and electrical installations.

These services shall aid the council to ensure the project is delivered to a good standard, in line with the requirements of the Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT) design and build contract.

The construction of the Reel Cinema, on the site of the old Waves Water Fun Centre on Nab Lane, began in August 2018. As of mid-June, 2019 the steel frame has been erected, with the floor slabs being poured and the car park surface has been completed in the main.

The development of the new cinema is due to complete early 2020, with the fit out to then be completed by Reel Cinemas ahead of the opening.
The addition of the Reel Cinema in the town centre, close to Blackburn College, will bring additional revenue and social spaces to the town.

Jessica Whitwell, senior building surveyor at Capita said:

“This REEL multi-screen Cinema complex is a very exciting project for Capita, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and local residents. We, at Capita, are lucky to have been involved in various stages of the design and construction phases. The building is starting to take shape on site, and we look forward to working with the client and contractors through to the final product.”
