Capita employees become certified Mental Health First Aiders
The two-day course, run by REMPLOY and certified by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England, was designed to raise awareness and give first aiders practical skills to spot the triggers and support colleagues affected by mental health issues in the workplace and beyond.
Eight employees from Capita’s partnerships with Sheffield City Council and North Tyneside Council participated in the training, which provided an in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing. It also taught practical skills and knowledge of when and how to step in and to appropriately reassure and guide a person to further support.
On completing the course, Sharon Pugh at Capita Local Public Services said:
‘I’ve always had an interest in people, particularly those trying to cope with a mental health issue. The course offered me much more than I expected, including the promotion of new and positive language around mental health, a ‘toolbox’ of information and guidance from the MFHA and understanding that spotting and dealing with the early signs of mental health offers people the very best chance of a successful recovery and a more positive future.”
Newly certified Mental Health First Aiders from Capita Local Public Services The course took place at our business park in North Tyneside.
Richard Carmichael, Partnership Director at North Tyneside said:
“It is estimated that one in four people in the UK experience a mental health problem every year, with one in six people reporting common mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression in any given week. As an employer, it is so important that we not only speak up about mental health but give our colleagues practical skills and support to help people deal with mental health issues in the workplace, just as we would a physical illness.”
